Horsell Care

About us:

Horsell Care was formed by a small group of forward-thinking residents in 1999 at a time of significant social, economic and political changes. Illness, disability or mobility problems can sometimes make it difficult for older residents to get to important appointments or even to the local shops.

This was the genesis for the creation of Horsell Care some nineteen years ago. In most cases, we have found that our clients don’t have relatives or friends living close by, so they rely on Horsell Care. Horsell Care also arranges social events and runs quarterly coffee mornings where clients and volunteers chat over refreshments. Annual events include a canal trip on a narrow boat, an Easter lunch at a local Pub, a Christmas lunch at a local pub, a visit to Wisley Gardens, lunch at the AGM and a Christmas Party for all our clients at the Horsell Evangelical Church.  We have volunters monitoring our helpline 5 days/week allowing us to respond to customer request at short notice.

We are the proud winner of the 2018 BBC Surrey and Sussex Community Heroes Awards in the category ‘Good Neighbour Scheme’.

Our service is mainly for older people, particularly those who do not drive any more, find it difficult to use public transport or, in some instances, lack the confidence, for whatever reason, to go out on their own or for instance, to drive on motorways.

However, some of our clients are disabled either long-term or short-term and not in the ‘older category’ (e.g. after an operation, injury, etc).  We do not charge for our services but accept donations.

Being a Horsell Care volunteer doesn't mean you have to devote a lot of time - as little as a couple of hours, as and when available on your terms. Driving and/or manning the Helpline can make a big difference to somebody's life. We need volunteers to:

  • Drive and assist clients to and from appointments

  • Listen to the Helpline once/twice a month and arranging drivers, shoppers, etc.

  • Shop for clients

We ask all volunteers to obtain a DBS check which is paid for by us.

We know from the feedback and comments we receive from our clients and their families that our service really makes a difference and we would love to welcome you into our ‘family of volunteers’
